What are composite fillings, and how are they used?

The team of Gomez Family Dentistry is proud to offer tooth-colored fillings as a cavity treatment option. Tooth-colored fillings, also known as composite resin fillings, are made of a blend of glass and plastic to match the natural color of teeth. They can be used on front or back teeth and are a “cosmetically pleasing” way to treat cavities. Drs. Gina and Christopher Gomez of Pensacola, Florida, can evaluate you to determine if you are a good fit for tooth-colored cavity fillings at their office.

What are the advantages of using composite resin fillings to treat tooth decay?

Benefits of tooth-colored fillings include:

  • Cosmetic appeal. Unlike silver amalgam (metal) fillings which stand out, tooth-colored fillings blend in with your surrounding teeth for an invisible look
  • Strength and durability. While metal fillings need to be regularly replaced due to wear and tear, composite resin fillings will last longer, so you don’t have to worry about them breaking down over time
  • Less tooth damage. With metal fillings, more of the surrounding tooth structure will likely be removed for the filling to fit properly. Tooth-colored fillings require less drilling and therefore leave more of your natural tooth structure intact
  • Non-toxic. Unlike silver amalgam fillings, composite resin fillings are non-toxic and do not contain any mercury, which can be dangerous if ingested in large quantities
