What are the nine steps of the dental root canal procedure?
Sometimes, procedures like root canal therapy must be performed to address a problem, such as an infection or an abscess. However, many patients fear the procedure without really knowing what is involved and how it can alleviate pain, not cause it. Drs. Gina and Christopher Gomez are here to educate you on this treatment and the steps needed to address the problem at hand in a safe and pain-free manner!
What are the nine steps involved in the dental root canal procedure?
- Initial examination and consultation visit. The first step of a dental root canal procedure is an initial examination by the dentist. This includes taking X-rays of the affected tooth to determine the extent of damage and any signs of infection.
- Scheduling the procedure. If time is of the essence, we may be able to complete your procedure the same day to alleviate any pain and discomfort you might be experiencing.
- Administration of anesthetics. Once our dental team has a clear understanding of your tooth’s condition and you are ready to undergo treatment, Drs. Gina and Christopher Gomez will administer local anesthesia to numb the surrounding area around the affected tooth. This ensures that you do not feel any pain during the procedure.
- Creating an access hole. After numbing the area, our providers create a small access area in your tooth by using specialized tools. This allows them to remove damaged or infected pulp from inside your tooth.
- Cleaning and shaping the root canal. Using special instruments, our dentists will clean and shape the inside of the tooth’s root canals to remove all traces of infection and prepare them for filling.
- Filling the root canal. Once the canals have been thoroughly cleaned, they will be filled with a rubbery material called gutta-percha. Gutta-percha helps to seal the canals and prevent future infections.
- Placement of a temporary filling or crown. In some situations, a temporary filling might be placed to protect the tooth until a permanent crown can be made in a dental laboratory.
- Placing the permanent crown. During your final appointment, Drs. Gina and Christopher Gomez will place a permanent crown over the affected tooth. This restores the tooth’s function and natural appearance.
- Post-procedure care and follow-up visits. After your root canal procedure, it is important to take good care of your tooth by practicing good oral hygiene habits and always scheduling regular check-ups with your dentist. Follow-up visits may also be necessary to ensure the treated tooth is healing properly.

Christopher Gomez, DDS
Studied Chemistry at Florida International University. After college, he received a US Air Force Health Professions Scholarship and graduated at the top of his class from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in 2012. Then, he completed a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency Program at Keesler Air Force Base (Biloxi, Mississippi) and was stationed at Hurlburt Field Air Force Base, where he served the rest of his term as a Captain. Dr. Christopher completed a year-long Comprehensive Implant Residency Program in Bessemer, Alabama, which gave him specialized knowledge on dental implants. He is currently in a 2-year orthodontic program learning to do conventional orthodontics and clear aligners.
Gina Bertuglia Gomez, DDS
Studied Psychology and Spanish Studies at the University of Delaware before attending the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, where she met Dr. Christopher Gomez. Upon graduation from dental school, she completed a one-year General Practice Residency at Stonybrook University, NY. She has spent the last ten years in private practice in Gulf Breeze and Pensacola, Florida. Dr. Gina always keeps the patients’ best interests at heart and treats them the same way she would treat her family.
