What exactly is a root canal?
Think of a root canal as a rescue mission for your tooth. Is getting a root canal worth it?
Getting a root canal is often recommended as it maintains the natural tooth in place within the smile and avoids the need for extraction and replacement.
Is a root canal painful?
This might surprise you, but no! Root canals have a bad reputation, but modern dental technology has come a long way. With proper numbing and care, most of our patients report that getting a root canal feels no worse than getting a regular filling. It also eliminates the pain and infection that are causing the symptoms that are causing you grief!

Why do I need a root canal instead of just pulling the tooth?
Keeping natural teeth whenever possible is the best option for overall dental health. A root canal preserves the structure of your tooth, helps you chew comfortably, and ensures your smile stays intact. While pulling the tooth may seem simpler, replacing it with a bridge or implant can be much more complex and costly in the long run.
How long does a root canal take?
A single root canal treatment typically takes about an hour or so, depending on the complexity of the case. Sometimes, follow-up appointments may be needed, but this is all part of making sure your tooth is healthy and happy again. Bring some music to listen to, and you’ll find it is over in no time at all!
What should I expect after the procedure?
After your root canal treatment, your tooth might feel a little sensitive for a day or two, but this is completely normal. Our team often recommends using over-the-counter pain relief if needed. Once the healing process is complete, your tooth will be as good as new! Most times, you will also need a crown or filling to protect your tooth in the long term, so follow your dentist’s advice to ensure the longevity of your natural tooth.

Christopher Gomez, DDS
Studied Chemistry at Florida International University. After college, he received a US Air Force Health Professions Scholarship and graduated at the top of his class from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in 2012. Then, he completed a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency Program at Keesler Air Force Base (Biloxi, Mississippi) and was stationed at Hurlburt Field Air Force Base, where he served the rest of his term as a Captain. Dr. Christopher completed a year-long Comprehensive Implant Residency Program in Bessemer, Alabama, which gave him specialized knowledge on dental implants. He is currently in a 2-year orthodontic program learning to do conventional orthodontics and clear aligners.
Gina Bertuglia Gomez, DDS
Studied Psychology and Spanish Studies at the University of Delaware before attending the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, where she met Dr. Christopher Gomez. Upon graduation from dental school, she completed a one-year General Practice Residency at Stonybrook University, NY. She has spent the last ten years in private practice in Gulf Breeze and Pensacola, Florida. Dr. Gina always keeps the patients’ best interests at heart and treats them the same way she would treat her family.
