Implant-based restorations are the most reliable teeth replacements available if you suffer from tooth loss. Dental implants are known for preserving bone tissue, stabilizing nearby teeth, and enhancing your smile’s esthetics and function, just like natural teeth.Â
At Gomez Family Dentistry in Pensacola, Florida, Drs. Gina & Christopher Gomez use advanced technology, including 3D CT scans, to deliver the most precise outcome during implant treatment. Once placed, a dental implant settles so well in your mouth that it doesn’t feel or look like a replacement!
A dental implant is a screw surgically inserted in your jawbone to replace your natural tooth root. Dental implants are made from medical-grade materials like titanium to ensure a safe and durable outcome. Titanium is bio-inert, resulting in minimal rejections with your body. After implant placement, the jawbone biologically connects with the implant to form a solid foundation to anchor your tooth prosthesis.
A dental implant doesn’t work in isolation. Above it, we attach an abutment that adds length to your implant and connects it to a prosthesis. The final piece of an implant is a natural-looking restoration/tooth prosthesis, which could be a bridge, denture, or crown.
Your dental implant journey starts with a consultation with our dental team. We use digital scanning tools to study your teeth and gums to establish implant eligibility.
After planning your treatment, it’s time for implant surgery. We usually perform this outpatient procedure using local anesthesia to minimize discomfort. Once you are comfortable, the dentist makes a small incision on your gums to expose your bone, then drills a small hole to place an implant. Next, we place a healing cap to guide the gums as they heal around the implant. Finally, we suture the surgical site, allowing four to six months to heal.
During healing, you should observe optimal oral hygiene and a specific diet to avoid an implant infection called peri-implantitis. You should also stick to routine follow-ups with our dental office to ensure healing occurs as expected.
During healing, your jawbone and implant fuse through osseointegration to become one biological structure. This fusion means your implant forms a solid foundation to support your given restoration.
Once healing and fusion occur, your implant journey is almost complete. You’ll come to our office for a minor surgery. We’ll remove your healing cap and replace it with an abutment (connector). This procedure requires about two weeks of healing. During this appointment, we also take your bite impressions to be used by our dental lab to craft your customized restoration.Â
The final step is topping off your implant with a crown, bridge, or denture — your final restoration depends on the number of missing teeth. Once we restore your tooth, you can smile, eat, and laugh as if you’ve never lost teeth!
Dental implants are superior teeth replacements that allow you to eat and smile confidently without worrying about your teeth. The many benefits of dental implants include:
